Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. It begins when the new moon is sighted, with the Eid prayer in the morning, and continues with visits to family and neighbours, new clothes, festive food and gifts — especially for children. It is celebrated by Muslims everywhere, from Egypt, Morocco and the Gulf to Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia and Kazakhstan, and in families all over Europe and North America.

At its heart Eid is a day of gratitude, generosity and reconciliation. Here are eleven ideas for gifts and greetings in that spirit.

1. Remember Zakat al-Fitr first

Before the gifts, there is the charity of Eid. Zakat al-Fitr is given before the Eid prayer so that people in need can celebrate too. Involving children — explaining it and letting them hand it over — teaches them that Eid's generosity starts with those who have least.

2. Eidi in new notes and a beautiful envelope

Eidi, the money given to children (and sometimes to adults by elders), is the moment children wait for. Get crisp new notes from the bank in the last days of Ramadan, and choose envelopes the children will want to keep — or decorate plain ones with them a few days before. In Malaysia and Indonesia these are the green packets of duit raya and THR.

3. A box of dates and sweets for the visits

You will visit parents, relatives and neighbours, and arriving empty-handed is never done. Premium dates, ma'amoul, kahk, baklava, or a tin of homemade cookies like the kue kering of Indonesia make the perfect visiting gift. Pack several small boxes in advance so you are ready for every door.

4. Attar or oud

Fragrance is a classic and loved Eid gift. An alcohol-free attar in a small glass bottle, or a set of bakhoor and an incense burner for the home, suits parents, siblings and friends alike, and it is worn on the day itself.

5. Gifts for prayer

A soft prayer mat, a beautiful tasbih, a Quran stand of carved wood or a Quran with a translation in the family's language are gifts that are used every day. For a child who fasted for the first time this Ramadan, a small prayer set of their own is a meaningful reward.

6. New clothes — or something to wear with them

New clothes are part of Eid in most families. If buying the whole outfit is too personal, choose the detail: a scarf, a cap, bangles, a pair of shoes, or the fabric for a tailor-made outfit as is the custom in many countries.

7. Mehndi on Chaand Raat

In South Asian families, the night before Eid — Chaand Raat, the night of the moon sighting — is for bangles and henna. Book a henna artist for the girls and women of the family, or gift a session to a friend; the bazaar walk afterwards is part of the fun.

8. Host an open house

In Malaysia it is the rumah terbuka; in many places it is simply keeping the door open. Invite neighbours of every faith, colleagues and friends without family nearby to share the Eid table. It is a gift of welcome, and the best way to share the day with people who are curious about it.

9. Ask and offer forgiveness

In Indonesia and Malaysia people greet each other on Eid by asking pardon — mohon maaf lahir dan batin. Wherever you are, Eid is a good day to call the relative you have not spoken to, write the message you have been putting off, or mend a quarrel. It costs nothing and is often the gift that matters most.

10. A gentle personalized Eid song

For parents and grandparents, especially those far away, a song with their names in it is a greeting they keep. Tell Melodo who it is for, how your family spends Eid morning and what you are grateful for after Ramadan; it writes the lyrics and sings them with real vocals in about a minute — ask for a nasheed-like style with voice and soft percussion — in Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Indonesian, Malay, Bengali, English and more. Send it as a gift page sealed until Eid, so they see a countdown and open it on the day, or share a link that plays in any browser. The first song is free.

11. Make Eid special for someone alone

A student far from home, a new neighbour, a widow, a refugee family in your city: invite them to the Eid meal, bring them a plate and a box of sweets, or include their children in your family's eidi. Eid al-Fitr is meant to be a joy shared by the whole community.

Eid Mubarak

The most cherished Eid gifts are rarely the most expensive. They are the ones given with care and a sincere wish — health, peace and a blessed year for the people you love. Choose a few ideas that suit your family, prepare them in the last days of Ramadan, and leave Eid itself free for prayer, visits and being together.
