Songs for someone special
Dads tend to wave off a speech. A song with his name, his worst jokes and the things he taught you is harder to wave off — and it will quietly end up on repeat in his car.

A lot of fathers show love by doing: fixing the bike, driving you to practice at 6 a.m., checking the tyre pressure before every long trip. Plenty of them are not used to hearing it said back. A song gets around that — he can listen to it in the car on his own, and you don't have to watch him try to find a reply.
Tell us what you call him, a few of his favourite phrases and one or two things he taught you. The lyrics are written around them, the music is composed in the style you pick, and the song is sung with real vocals and ready in about a minute. It works for Father's Day, his retirement, his first grandchild, or a plain Sunday when you want him to know.

“A warm country song for my dad Mike, who I call Pops. He spent every Saturday under the hood of his old pickup and taught me to change a tyre at twelve. He never missed one of my football games, even after night shifts. His favourite line is “measure twice, cut once”. Make the verses a little funny about his road-trip maps and the chorus a sincere thank-you with “Pops” in it.”
His catchphrases and dad jokes. The one the whole family groans at is the perfect hook.
Something he taught you with his hands: changing a tyre, casting a line, fixing a leaking tap, parallel parking.
The sidelines — every match, recital or school play he turned up to, even after a long shift.
His car, his team, his barbecue: the things he is quietly proud of.
A time he was strict and turned out to be right, told with a smile now.
What you call him — Dad, Papa, Pops, Baba, Appa — and the town or street you grew up on.
A moment you saw him soften: the hospital corridor, the tears at your graduation he blamed on hay fever, the day he became a grandad.
Hey Pops, you old road-map man,
you taught me to fall and to get up again,
with grease on your hands and a joke on the way,
Mike, you're the reason I'm standing today.
Match the song to what is on his car radio. Country and acoustic suit the dad who loves storytelling and open roads; classic rock suits the one who still air-drums at the lights. If he is the quiet type, keep it simple and sincere rather than jokey — one true memory says more than a list of compliments. And if he loves a laugh, let the verses tease him about his DIY disasters, then turn the final chorus into an honest thank-you.
Names, memories, the mood you want. Skip anything you like.

Not if you set the tone. Ask for something upbeat and funny with his sayings in it, and save one sincere line for the end — that is usually the one he remembers.
It can open a door that a phone call keeps failing to. Keep it honest and small — one good memory and one thing you're grateful for — and leave the old arguments out of the lyrics.
Yes. Make a lyric video from the song, with the cover art or, with a subscription, a slideshow of your own photos — old family pictures work beautifully.
Yes, there is an instrumental mode. Most people choose vocals for a song for dad, though, because his name in the lyrics is the point.
